    confident about your future

Taking Part: Students

Calling state school students who are:

  • Enthusiastic
  • Motivated to grow
  • Looking to get a leg-up on their future

Our charity allows you to apply for placements with UK's leading employers for a work experience that gives you a glimpse into how these companies work and helps you gain professional skills for your future.

We also include guidance on submitting your application as well as top-tips on how to make the most of the placement if selected.

Can I apply?
Employers have varying requirements, but S4SNextGen is for students who are:

  • 14-18 yr olds that attend a state secondary school/academy/college
  • Lacking access to work experience and would struggle to otherwise find a quality placement
  • Motivated & will make the most of any opportunity; grades/marks are not part of your application!

How does it work? See the step-by-step process below...

1

REGISTER FOR S4SNEXTGEN

State school students 14-18 years can register to apply for placements.

2

SEARCH FOR NEARBY OPPORTUNITIES

Our simple search tool lets you look at opportunities in your area and search by opportunity type, even those outside of your dates in case you are flexible. All placements can help you learn transferable skills and valuable insights for your future career.

3

TEACHER APPROVAL NEEDED!

Before applying to anything, you will need the registered teacher to approve your account and answer a few questions about you before you eventually submit an application. Teacher approvals happen a few ways so please see our FAQs.

6

INVITED FOR PLACEMENT (OR INTERVIEW)

You will get an email if your application is successful or if they offer an interview. In both cases your teacher will be put in touch with the employer to organise the placement (we cannot give your contact details to the employer for safeguarding reasons).

5

EMPLOYERS REVIEW APPLICATIONS

Once the teacher submits the application it goes straight to the employers so they can review and decide who is the best candidate for the placement.  They try to do this a few weeks before the placement but timelines vary.

If you are not offered the place you were after, you are welcome to apply for other opportunities.

4

APPLY FOR PLACEMENTS

We ask a few simple and general questions to understand more about your interests and motivations for applying. Employers are interested in students who are willing to learn and enthusiastic, so grades and previous interest are not a factor.

7

EMPLOYER & TEACHER FINALISE LOGISTICS

At this stage your teacher and the employer will liaise to confirm the details such as timings and make sure all the relevant safety checks are in place. You will also need to make sure you have appropriate parental consent to attend the placement.

8

ATTEND THE PLACEMENT

The day has arrived - time to attend the placement. It is really important you make the most out of your time with the employer so we will make sure we send you a full checklist of things to think about to prepare in advance and think about whilst you are doing the placement.

9

FEEDBACK ON PLACEMENT

Feeding back to the employer will encourage them to offer more placements and also helps you to reflect on the experience and what your next steps are. They also give students helpful feedback on their strengths and advice for the future.
